Moth & Clover

For this project, we had to use Illustrator to create a screen-based composition featuring the hybrid “plantimal”. We utilized the pen tool to generate and manipulate shapes and lines within our composition. Special attention was required to build up complex details, adding interest to the image. Additionally, we aimed to achieve an intriguing figure/ground relationship through careful consideration of the interplay between positive and negative space. The assigned “plantimal” for design was a combination of a moth and a four-leaf clover.

At the outset of my design process, I sketched thumbnails to gather ideas on how to blend both characters while implementing all the project's rules. One significant similarity between a moth and a four-leaf clover is the presence of four wings and four leaves. I modified the leaves to resemble moth wings, incorporating the lining appearance of a leaf while retaining the characteristics of moth wings. Subsequently, I added the stem of the clover, giving the impression of a moth resting on a clover. I then scan the final sketch to use as my template in Illustrator.

Throughout the creation process, I employed the pen tool and limited the color palette to black, white, and gray. The use of a Wacom drawing tablet proved beneficial, especially during extended periods of using the pen tool. Overall, I believe I succeeded in creating a screen-based composition centered around the hybrid “plantimal”.
