Metate
At the outset of my design process, I used a layout cheat sheet to initiate my infographic. While the cheat sheet provided initial guidance, it changed as I gathered information. Unlike previous projects, I abstained from sketching with a pencil for this one. Instead, I immediately contemplated infusing vibrant colors into the infographic, drawing inspiration from the rich color palette prevalent in my Mexican culture.
Initially, my infographic was intended to explore a different topic—specifically, different types of owls, aligning with my preference for educational content. However, a shift occurred when I stumbled upon a TikTok video featuring a journalist in Oaxaca, Mexico, interviewing a woman using a metate. This resonated with me, recalling countless stories my mother shared about my great-grandmother's use of a metate. Consequently, my focus pivoted to this ancient tool, aiming to enlighten people who may not be familiar with it.
I then attempted to locate a metate for photography purposes, but my only viable option was to purchase one, and that wasn't feasible due to shipping timing constraints. Thus, I resorted to an online search for an image, which served as a template for creating a vector design of a metate in Illustrator. Throughout this process, I utilized various tools such as the shape tool, text tool, curvature pen tool, and pathfinder tool. Despite the availability of additional tools like a Wacom tablet, I stuck to my comfort zone—the laptop mousepad—for the majority of the mini-illustrations.
The text tool was consistently applied in my design, with a touch on the use of warp on the title.
The primary objective of my infographic is to educate viewers about the metate. I achieve this by providing information on its manufacturing process, historical usage, practical applications, measurements, and even a recipe associated with the tool. Each subsection features mini-illustrations to enhance the visual appeal characteristic of infographics. Considering that not all viewers may be familiar with this tool, I aimed for detailed clarity, inspired by the desire to not only educate but also share an element of my culture. I endeavored to be as detailed as possible so that even viewers unfamiliar with this tool would find it easy to read and understand.
