Up
In the process of my design, I knew I wanted to choose a movie, and that movie was "Up," a 2009 American computer-animated film produced by Pixar and released by Disney. This film is a blend of many genres (comedy-drama, adventure, drama, and fantasy), but it is primarily a children’s animated film. While watching this film, I noticed the vibrant colors that make it a children's film, but there are aspects in the movie that touch on miscarriage, death, and loneliness, which adults would understand better.
For my genre switch, I decided to transform the film "Up" into a horror animation film. In my research on the horror genre or animated horror, I observed that many movie posters use dark colors such as black, red, or other shaded colors with a malevolent appearance.
In my design, my research aided me in selecting color swatches, and then I began contemplating which other horror movie features balloons. The movie that came to mind was "It." I used a picture of the main character from the movie "Up," an image poster of the movie "It," and an image of the house where Carl (the main character in "Up") lived. I didn't sketch by hand or scan but used those images as my templates to initiate my illustrations. Another decision I made was to draw inspiration from the "It" poster for my horror design, aiming for something similar but with "Up" features.
For my design, the tools I utilized were the shape tool, curvature pen tool, text tool, Effects, pathfinder, and opacity. Throughout my design, I did not use a Wacom tablet but rather my laptop mouse pad. The tool I used the most was the curvature pen tool. I employed shapes to create the glasses with the minus front in shape modes. I also used shapes on Carl’s head, nose, bow tie, and lower body, and I used the curvature pen tool to modify the shapes as I wanted them to be.
The concept for my design was to transform a children’s animated film into a horror animation film, and I believe I have achieved this by choosing dark-shaded colors and giving Carl a more malevolent appearance than he had in the original film.
