Arizona’s Nature

The challenge for this project was to create a complex and seamless pattern design that 'pays homage' to an artist, designer, or illustrator and includes an example image of the artist that we chose when we turn in this project. The design had to be reproducible as a seamless repeated pattern from a swatch and be created with a clearly defined color scheme.

This Desert design was made in Illustrator using techniques such as live color, pattern creation and manipulation, shape duplication and reflection, transforming tricks, and the pathfinder tool. The artist I chose that influenced my design was Flora Waycott; her designs show a wide range of nature, children illustrations, animals (cats and birds) in pastel colors. The three symbols I decided on were Desert insects, desert plants, and the use of pastel colors. The pastel colors swatch I decided on includes: Aquamarine (35, 0, 22, 0), Mauve (14, 30, 0, 0), Vivid Tangerine (0, 48, 50, 0), Dolly (2, 0, 45, 0), and Reef (30, 0, 40, 0).

To begin this design, I sketched the most common Arizona desert plants, insects, and decided at the last minute to add a bottle of water for the importance of hydration in hot locations. I then scanned my sketches to use them as a template in Illustrator. The most frequently used tools were the pen tool and shape duplication and reflection tools to create this seamless pattern design.
